FreezerFive vs Craftybase: costing ledger or weekly cook

Craftybase is a materials inventory and cost of goods tracker for makers who manufacture in batches, and FreezerFive is a weekly production system for a kitchen selling family freezer boxes.

The short answer

These two are less rivals than neighbors. Craftybase answers the accountant's question: what did these units cost to make, what is on hand, and what is the value of the inventory sitting in the freezer. FreezerFive answers Thursday's question: what do we cook, how many pounds do we pull, whose box has the dairy free version and what order do the stops go in. If your books are the thing keeping you up, start there. If the cook day is, start here.

FreezerFive and Craftybase side by side

Each row compares one part of the week: how the menu opens and closes on your deadline, how orders scale into pounds, quarts and whole cases, where household allergen flags end up, what the pull weights and cook day sequence look like, and how the delivery stops group.

Choose FreezerFive when

  • If your pain is the two hours between the order deadline and a usable pick list, costing depth will not touch that problem.
  • When forty households each carry substitutions and allergen notes, you need those to reach the cook, not just the ledger.
  • If you are guessing how many cases of chicken to open every week, pull weights against real cook yield fix it immediately.
  • When you deliver on a fixed weekly route, grouping the stops belongs in the same tool that printed the boxes.

Choose Craftybase when

  • If your accountant wants tight cost of goods and inventory valuation across everything you make, a costing tool is the right home for that.
  • If you also produce shelf stable goods like sauces or spice blends, a maker inventory system covers those lines properly.
  • If lot traceability across raw materials is a requirement in your operation, that is core to inventory software and secondary in ours.

Two different weeks, two different questions

Costing software is retrospective by design and that is a virtue. It tells you what a batch of forty beef ragu pans truly consumed, at the case prices you paid, so the margin you believe in is the margin you have. Every kitchen that has ever repriced a box after a beef spike knows why that matters, and it is the reason our own margin calculator exists.

Production software is prospective. On Tuesday night the deadline closes and something has to say pull eighty eight pounds of chicken, open three cases, thaw starting tonight, run the dairy free batch first, print twelve pan tags with allergen flags. Those two jobs do not compete for the same hour of your day, which is why some kitchens end up running both without friction.

How much costing FreezerFive actually does

Enough to run the trade properly and no further. Recipes carry ingredient costs at your case prices, so each entree has a food cost, each box has a food cost percent, and you can see when a protein move has pushed the five entree box past thirty percent. Packaging and labor per box sit alongside it because those are the lines small kitchens forget when they set a price and then defend it for two years.

What it does not do is act as your inventory ledger of record or produce a valuation your accountant will file. If that is what you need, a purpose built costing system is the honest answer and there is no reason to pretend otherwise. The two coexist fine: cook plan here, ledger there.

Which one to buy first at your size

Under about twenty boxes a week, neither is urgent. A costed recipe sheet and a notebook still work, and your time is better spent on the menu rotation and on getting labels right. Between twenty and about sixty boxes, production planning breaks first, almost always, and it breaks on thaw quantities and substitutions rather than on numbers you could look up later.

Past a hundred boxes with two cook days and a second pair of hands, the costing question gets loud again because a two percent slip on food cost is real money every week. That is usually the point where kitchens add a proper ledger on top rather than instead. Home Kitchen at twenty nine dollars covers the first stage, Commercial Kitchen at seventy nine covers the second.

Questions people ask before they choose

Can I run both without duplicating work?

Yes, and it is a common arrangement above a hundred boxes a week. FreezerFive plans and prints the run, and your costing system receives the production and material usage for the ledger. The recipe lives in both places, so agree on one version of each recipe card and update both when it changes.

Does FreezerFive track what is in my freezer right now?

It tracks what the coming run needs and what a full case leaves over, which is the number that stops you opening a fourth case for nine pounds. It is not a continuous inventory ledger with valuation, and it does not try to be.

Which one helps more with pricing the box?

For setting a price you can defend, our margin calculator and the recipe costing inside FreezerFive get you there. For proving the cost after the fact across every product line and season, a dedicated costing system is stronger. Most kitchens price with the first and audit with the second.

Settle this one on your own menu week

Reading two columns side by side is one thing. Watching your own beef ragu count turn into pull weights, case counts and a segregated dairy free batch is another. Send one entree recipe card and last week's orders and we will run this head to head against your kitchen rather than a sample one, including the part where the other tool wins.
